The Brooks Rotary Club meets every Thursday at noon at the Heritage Inn and Convention Centre in Brooks, except for the first Thursday of the month which is an executive meeting.

For the year 2019-2020, Norman Gerestein is the Brooks Rotary Club President.

What We Did Last Year



July, 2015

–  Communities in Bloom

–  sponsored a flower bed for $250

–  participated in the Celebrity Clean-up

–  attended the Judge’s Dinner

–  guest speakers:

August, 2015

–  Medieval Faire (Aug. 8 & 9)

–  members, spouses and friends of Rotary looked after the main entrance gate on Saturday and Sunday, as part of the Club’s general community service.

–  ADG Geri Hecker attended the Aug. 13 regular meeting

– Annual Rotary Club corn fest potluck (Aug. 27)

–  held at the Newell Lake Sailing Club, for members, spouses and partners and friends of Rotary

–  moved banking to the Credit Union

– guest speakers:

–  Rebecca Ross – Mexico Mission


September, 2015

–  attended the City of Brooks ‘Community Information & Registration Evening’ – Sept. 2 & 3

–  membership information table, with 7 members volunteering a total of 6 hrs.

–  Reg Radke attended the Lethbridge ‘President’s meeting’ on Sept. 2

–  Breakfast for Learning (Sept. 16)

–  members cooked up pancakes and sausages, at the Griffin Park School and donated $300 towards the school snack program

–  this annual event, is held at various Grasslands Public Schools, to highlight the need for a healthy start to the day for all children

–  RYPEN – Sept. 23 – 27 near Lomond

– sponsoring Beth Mentie (BCHS)

–  completed the Alberta Community Initiatives funding program reporting requirements for the outdoor exercise park.

–  guest speakers:

October, 2015

–  Reg Radke attended the RLI in Calgary on Oct. 3

–  Post-secondary scholarships

–  awarded three $1000 scholarship to 3 BCHS students:

–  Jaira Mae Floro Funa, U of A (BSc –Biochem)

–  YuChao Jiao, U of A (BA)

–  Nicolina Lee, MHC (Nursing – U of C)

–  Larry Wasylyshen and Mohammed Idriss attended the Grants Qualification seminar in Calgary

–  attended Make Dreams Real, Oct. 24 in Calgary

–  DG Martin Harvey and his wife Liz, attended our Oct. 29 regular meeting

–  ADG Geri Hecker and her husband Frank, attended our Oct. 29 regular meeting

–  Rotary International Foundation “Polio Fund” program donation of $1000

–  inducted new member – Grant Jensen

November, 2015

–  Norm Gerestein participated in the ‘Walk a Mile In Her Shoes’ fundraiser

–  Adventures in Agriculture

–  Reg Radke attended the RLI in Calgary on Nov. 14

–  completed the Alberta Community Initiatives funding ($8500) reporting requirements for the Philippines Tele-Medicine project.

–  Brooks Rotary contributed $500 towards the total project value of $17,954.70

–  Larry Wasylyshen, International Director, attended the District International Service committee meeting in Calgary

–  RotaryRadio Day (Nov. 28)

–  members solicit donations from local businesses, and auction the items ´on air`, on Q105.7

– this is one of the three main fund raisers that helps the Club carry out support for community projects and supports.

December, 2015

–  Salvation Army kettles (Dec 10 & 11)

–  members tend the donation kettles set up at Freson Bros and WalMart. (21 hours, 9 volunteers)

–  Reg Radke attended the RLI in Calgary on Dec. 7

–  donated $500 to the local Brooks chapter of SADD

–  donated $325 to the Brooks Toy Lending Library to purchase new car seats

–  Christmas supper (Dec. 17)

– members and spouses and partners gather for a traditional Christmas supper and humorous gift exchange

–  Royal Canadian Legion annual Christmas dinner for Seniors

–  contributed $500 towards the preparation of this meal

–  some members participate as celebrity servers


January, 2016

–  reviewed Rotary International Council on Legislation changes and submitted feedback

–  changed address  (no longer rental a Postal Canada box).

–  guest speakers:

–  Lisa Crosby – Brooks Municipal Library


February, 2016

–  Encounters Canada – sponsored 4 studetns:

–  Isabela Salinas (Bassano), Tara Vogt (Rosemary), Diana Bohutska (St. Joe’s), Arynne Stoke (BCHS)

–  Adventures in Technology – sponsored Brayden Leveque to travel to this event in Saskatoon.

–  SALTS funding – funded two students (one for $500, one for $300)

–  Encounter at Ottawa

–  RYLA funding – three students @ $500 each

–  presented a donation of $11,400 to the Dialysis Campaign with the Brooks Health Foundaiton

–  donated $500 to Rebecca Ross, for her work with the Mexican Mission, part of the Christian and Missionary Alliance organization.

–  guest speakers:

–  Denise Henning, Pres. Medicine Hat College

March, 2016

–  Brooks Music Festival – Mar. 14 onward

– committed to a long-term annual support in the amount of $3000 towards this competitive festival, involving approx. 1000 performers.

–  provided a MC for one of the Grand Concerts

–  Leona Ferguson and Inge Ellefson attended PETS & SETS in Calgary on Mar. 19

– donated $250 towards Communities in Bloom, for the sponsorship of one raised flower bed

–  guest speakers:

April, 2016

–  annual AGLC fundraiser at Medicine Hat (Vanshaw) (Apr. 8 & 9)

–  29.5 hrs. / 22 people

–  ADG Geri Hecker attended Apr. 7 busines meeting

–  inducted new members:  Sean Beaton, Inge Ellefson

–  RYLA – sponsored three students to attend event in Canmore at annual DISCON

–  Carlos Howey (Duchess)

–  Raquel Neeser-Carazo (St. Joe’s)

–  Brianna Bolt (BCHS)

–  Skills Alberta Regional Competition

– the Club donated $500 to Brooks Composite High School to assist with expenses of students travelling to the Skills Canada competition in Edmonton, to compete in various trades and skills.

–  contributed $2500 to the Shelter Canada house  building project in El Salvador.

–  this is a partnership with the Rotary Clubs in Airdrie and Cochrane and Shelter Canada, with a total project value of $30,000, with the support of District 530 grants.

–  Leona Ferguson attended the District ad hoc international directors meeting in Calgary

–  invited to attend a City of Brooks & County of Newell Joint Services Committee meeting, on April 12, alongwith representatives from other service clubs to discuss their support role in the community

May, 2016

–  held a Strategic Planning session on May 5 (facilitated by Karen Blewett of Alberta Community and Culture.

–  Dinosaur Pump It Up Run (May 7)

– this 3km, 5 km and 10km Walk Run, held at Dinosaur Provincial Park, with the support of Alberta Parks & Recreation, is one of the three main fundraisers for the Club

–  SPEC Association for Families and Children also use this event to fundraise by selling food and drinks

–  Richard Gette and Inge Ellefson attended the District Conference in Canmore

–  Leona Ferguson attended RLI in Calgary on May 7

– Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) – sponsored three students ($1500)

–  donated $1000 to the Brooks Toy Lending Library to update car seats

– Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment  (RYPEN) – Registered one student,

–  guest speakers:

–  Cheryl Dyck – President, Brooks Music Festival

–  Dennis Houston – USA Antarctic Station


June, 2016

  participated in the annual 101.1 The One & Q105.7 Charity Chuckwagon Races, with a contribution of $125 to the winner’s charity of choice.

– driver was a member of the BCHS Spirit Club

–  Kinsmen Rodeo

–  members and friends of Rotary volunteered to help serve in the Rodeo Beer Gardens, as part of our partnership to help the Kinsmen Club of Brooks

–  Annual year-end golf and barbeque social – June 23 at Executive Par 3 Meadows

–  attended by members, spouses and partners and friends of Rotary

–  marks the “hand-off“ to the new President and Executive Directors for the upcoming year.

–  donated $200 to the Brooks & District Museum to help fund their annual Canada Day pancake breakfast

–  provided volunteers to help with the event

– presented updated Club by-laws for review and approval

–  guest speaker:

–  Sonya Clark – Liberation of Christian and Yazidi Children
